Says Dungan,“ Working in Alys Beach is something I have had the honor of doing from its very beginning— being in the room when someone said‘ what if it was all white’ is a memory I will always cherish. In that way of collaborating— working here feels less like designing an object, and more like participating in a shared act of authorship. There is a quiet discipline at work. The design code does not begin by asking,‘ What do you want to say?’ but rather,‘ What does this place require?’ There is a language— of restraint,

of light and shadow, wall and void, and proportion— and invites you to speak within it. Paradoxically, that restraint becomes a kind of freedom— not all designers can grasp this. It clears away the noise of self-expression and asks for something more eternal.

In many places, architecture can drift toward the singular, even the self-referential. In Alys, the individual home must yield, at least in part, to the life of the whole. Each wall, each opening, each mass participates in a larger composition that extends beyond the property line. You are not simply shaping a house, but contributing to a continuum— to streets, courtyards, and the quiet choreography of daily life.
