ALYS BEACH WELCOMES A NEW POCKET PARK
Vera’ s Garden
Found on the northwest side of town, at the north end of Plumbago Lane, is Vera’ s Garden, designed by Alys Beach Landscape Coordinator Kendall Horne. Inspired by its namesake, the natural world-loving great granddaughter of Alys Stephens, the new green space celebrates the beauty and bounty of fruiting trees with Kieffer Pears in Belgian Fence Espaliers, Fig trees, Meyer Lemon citrus trees presented in Lunaform urns, as well as seasonal herbs presented in Lunaform urns. An allée of eight oak trees encloses a small stone-bordered turf lined with boxwood hedges while Japanese Yew hedges delineate space for some of the park’ s special elements— the benches, the espaliers, and a set of decorative, whimsical apple and pear sculptures. When in season, Vera’ s Garden’ s fruits and herbs are meant to be enjoyed by residents and guests alike, though please be mindful to handle the trees with care and be sure to leave some behind for others to enjoy.
